Many people spend hours designing their pond, digging it and planting it, an then just throw some slabs over the liner edge in the hope that it will finish it all off. How wrong they are. Its the single most important job for creating a pond that looks natural and gives proper support for the whole project. This part of your pond needs a lot of care and attention. This part of the build will take the longest to perfect, because Mother Nature has to perform her unique and wondrous magic; and because she specialises in perfection, you need to allow her all the time in the world; you will see what I mean later.
Your pond will be a focal point. Whenever anyone sees your garden , they will make a beeline for your pond. Children will want to get right up close to feel the water and see the fish. If your edging is not firm and fixed, all this activity will reduce the edge to an unsightly mess. As there are real dangers to livestock when you use concrete, its good idea to get the edging right, right from the start. This is my recipe for the perfect, solid and long lasting edge that will last for years with
no maintenance; and it will withstand any amount of admiring and inquisitive traffic.
Here are some photos of the edge to my pond. The rocks are sunk into the pond an cemented into place the liner goes at the back of the stone. you can just see a bit of the liner through the grass. This will eventually be covered as the grass grows.

Larger rocks and a large space between rock and liner means soil can be added to create a bog garden |
